Once the plane lands in Puerto Rico, and you hear the thunderous applause from the locals meaning you arrived safely, you know that you are about to embark on a magical and adventurous vacation. I was born in Chicago but my parents were born and raised in Puerto Rico and ever since I could remember we always traveled to Puerto Rico for our family vacations.
Puerto Rico has always had a special place in my heart, but after Hurricane Maria Swept through in 2017 and seeing how much of the island came together to overcome the hardships, it made me even more eager to explore all of its beauty.
I have a serious addiction to waterfalls and mountain views, and when it comes to Puerto Rico they have the best of both worlds. The sound of the waterfalls and mountain views put me in such a relaxed state of mind that it allows me to recharge my energy, and escape from all the craziness of everyday life.
Anywhere you go in Puerto Rico there is something to explore. This island has the best beaches in my book, and there are so many to choose from! You can go to Condado Beach by all of the ritzy hotels or escape to the town of Aguadilla where you will find Playa Punta Borinquen which has a beautiful mountain cliff view and you can hear the relaxing sounds of the waves crashing against the rocks.
Puerto Ricans happen to be some of my favorite people ever! They are so warm hearted and welcoming. Do not be surprised when you sit down to eat and you hear them say “Buen Provecho” which basically means “enjoy your food” When you are visiting, the locals will make you feel like family instead of a visitor. We have such a celebration for life that we are always living it up. Whether it be with food, music, or just our vibrant culture, we got it going on.
Now of course we cannot forget about Puerto Ricos food! I must say, we do have some pretty delicious food. We are known for “Criollo” cooking which is a blend of Spanish, African, and Caribbean influences, we are definitely more than just rice and beans! From staple dishes such as Mofongo, made of deep fried green plantains, or even Lechon, slowly roasted pork with juicy meat and crunchy skin, there is something for everyone to fall in love with.
I never get tired of Puerto Rico, every time I go I explore something new that I haven’t seen before. I am so proud of being Puerto Rican and so in love with this island that I definetly see myself living there in the furture.
Break out of your comfort zone and dare to discover the many hidden gems of Puerto Rico. Let the planning begin!
