Rock Those Curls Mamacita!

You know that feeling you get after you wash and style your curls and look in the mirror and you’re like “Oh snap! Who is that curly haired Goddess?” I know I sure do and you should too beautiful! For the past couple of years, I have learned to love my curls and have fallen so in love with my curls that I haven’t even thought of straightening my hair. This curly haired chica knows for a fact that caring for curls is no easy task. From dealing with the frizzy roots to taming those wild ends, curly hair has a complete mind of its own.

With that being said, all curly hair is different and has a preference when it comes to which products are being used. Allow me to show you what works to maintain my curly strands and hopefully you will find something new that may work for your curls!

Getting the Cut

Depending on the type of curly hair you have may alter the type of cut to get. I have very thick strands, and my hair almost reaches my hips. I get a trim every 6 to 8 weeks to keep my ends healthy, and to add shape to my hair. I ask the hair stylist for a long-layered face framing cut, making sure that the shortest layer is not too short, or it’ll be too poofy for my liking (trust me I know). It is very important that you communicate that with your hair stylist. Also, ask if they know how to cut curly hair because not everyone does, our curly hair has a lot of texture compared to straight hair. Make sure you do some research on your hair stylist!

Shampoo & Conditioner

Hask- Coconut Milk & Organic Honey Curl Care Shampoo & Conditioner
12 oz $4.77 @ Walmart

This Shampoo and Conditioner combo is MAGICAL! It does not contain any sulfates, parabens, phthalates, gluten, drying alcohol, or artificial color. Pretty much this means it will not strip your curls of their natural oils which in turn makes your hair dry, we do not want that. Both the shampoo and conditioner give my curls so much moisture and shine. My hair soaks it all up with so much happiness!

Now when it comes to my curls I wash them 1-2 times a week. What I typically do is mix a little bit of both the shampoo and conditioner together in the palm of my hands, then massage it through my scalp really well, from root to end, then rinse. Simple as that! You will notice right away a difference in the texture of your hair. When I rinse my hair, I use cool lukewarm water, hot water is a HUGE NO. Hot water opens up the hair follicles and tends to dry my hair out. Both the shampoo and conditioner will last me 2 months which is not bad I must say.

Hair Mask

Carol’s Daughter Curl Quenching Deep Moisture Mask
12oz $15.49 @ Ulta

Shea Moisture/ Coconut & Hibiscus Curl & Shine Conditioner with Silk Protein & Neem Oil
13oz $9.97 @ Walmart

I am such a hair mask junkie, every single time I see one labeled with the word Curls, I just have to buy it! Using a hair mask has got to be my favorite part of washing my beautiful curly locks. It feels like your hair was reborn & is ready to take on a new week of crazy weather (because Florida lol). The two masks mentioned above are both equally amazing and ultra-moisturizing! After using either one of these my hair turns out so plump and full of life! Now, I know that the Shea Moisture is a conditioner, but I use it as a hair mask and it is status.

After I rinse the shampoo and conditioner out of my hair I will once again mix both hair masks in the palm of my hands and coat every inch of my hair with this mixture and leave it on for a good 10 minutes. During that time, I will wash my face and body, shave, etc. So, to rinse out the product I use cold water. I have noticed that using cold water will add extra shine to my hair, and also closes your hair follicles.

As you can tell, I enjoy mixing products and creating my own concoction. Honestly, it has really worked out for me, and my curls just come out more voluptuous.

Styling Products

Hask- Coconut Milk & Organic Honey Curl Care Shampoo & Conditioner
12 oz $4.77 @ Walmart

Cantu/ Coconut Curling Cream
12oz $5.97 @ Walmart

Palmer’s Coconut Oil Formula Curl Conditioner Hair Pudding
14oz $5.72 @ Walmart

I don’t know about you, but I am an air-dry type of girl. The less heat I add to my hair the better. Personally, I do not blow dry my hair, use any diffusers to dry my curls, or anything like that, because it makes my hair more prone to breakage and frizzy.

Once I am out of the shower, I comb thru my hair to get rid of any knots. Then I use the sculpting spray by Hask, using this adds such a beautiful shine and really helps with the frizz throughout the day. I then, take both the Cantu Coconut Caring Cream & Palmers Coconut Oil Curl Condition Hair Pudding, mix both products together (of course) and work it through my curls evenly.

Now for the fun part, I flip my head upside down, and start shaking it from side to side and start scrunching my hair with my hands. Just like that I am out the door and, on my way, to conquer the day!

I know this sounds like a long process, but it literally takes 15 minutes max. Now don’t get me wrong, there are a few weeks when I dread washing my hair because of all I do, but the end results are always worth it!

When I look in the mirror, I like to tell myself “Watch out world this curly haired goddess is on a mission and nothing or anyone is going to stop her!” and then my day gets so much better!
